In association with our client, tissuemed®, we designed an applicator for a revolutionary new surgical sealant, tissuebond™. tissuebond™ will save surgeons’ valuable time and aid patient care during cardiovascular operations by allowing surgeons to do other tasks instead of having to stem bleeding. The sealant is activated using a purpose designed medical light, the tissuemed 180 Lightsource. There is no directly comparable product in the market.
There is no doubt that tissuebond™ is a life saving product. It is the nearest thing I have seen to those healing devices used by the doctor on Star Trek

The Lightsource 180 instrument is designed for low-volume manufacture using processes such as RIM casting, CNC machining, and metal fabrication using laser cut blanks.
The design and development of the control panel/user interface is focused on the needs of surgeons who will be using glove in the pressurised surgical setting The controls includes a removable ‘non-contact’ interface that can be sterilized, this interface uses the light output itself to be able to adjust key settings while the instrument is in use.
The Lightsource 180 instrument was designed to be manufactured in compliance with European Harmonised Standards EN60601-1 and EN60601-1-2 and European Electromagnetic Compatibility requirements.
All the components were detailed and computer-modelled using Pro Engineer software. Using this data, fully working prototypes were constructed in DCA’s in-house workshops and then evaluated and refined before commissioning production tooling. Toolmakers who could work directly from 3D data were selected to reduce time scales and to achieve component design intent.
I believe that tissuebond™ will allow better sealing of vascular grafts and blood vessels to prevent blood loss and possible complications. As a result tissuebond™ may reduce theatre time for vascular procedure and help to improve patient care

Tissuemed system components: replaceable cartridge lamp and tissuebond™ applicator
As part of the design and development of the instrument, a key requirement was for a replaceable lamp cartridge for a 180W Xenon element. The lamp cartridge had to be quick and easy to replace whilst achieving a highly accurate alignment with a sensitive optical system.
We also design the applicator for tissuebond™. The applicator is a disposable single-use delivery system, similar in size and shape to a pen, using a side-mounted finger-controlled lever to allow the precise delivery of a continuous bead of adhesive.
